Ignite Institute students build a real airplane and electric four-wheeler
Students at Boone County Schools' Ignite Institute unveiled two major engineering accomplishments on August 28: a fully student-built airplane and a custom electric four-wheel bicycle. Assistant Principal Don Black said students are "designing, building, testing, solving problems and creating things that are real." Media and the public were invited to view the completed projects firsthand.

Dixie Hwy resurfacing nears finish; Turfway reconfiguration on hold
Two Dixie Highway (U.S. 25) resurfacing projects in Boone County are nearing completion — milling and paving are done, with permanent striping remaining and single lane closures still possible. The U.S. 42 resurfacing between Ewing Blvd. and Main Street is now fully complete. Separately, a planned road reconfiguration on Dixie Highway between Turfway Road and Commonwealth Avenue has been postponed.

NKADD chief to address Florence Rotary club this Monday
Tara Johnson-Noem, executive director of the Northern Kentucky Area Development District, will speak at the Rotary Club of Florence's meeting Monday, August 31, at NKADD's offices at 22 Spiral Drive in Florence. She'll discuss how NKADD, which manages 88 staff and over $48 million in annual grants, serves Boone and seven other NKY counties through aging services, workforce development, food insecurity, and community programs. The meeting streams live on the Florence Rotary YouTube channel.

BCHS Girls Soccer drops two matches in weekend tournament play
The Boone County High School girls soccer team faced a tough weekend, falling 0–5 to Rockcastle County and 3–5 to Rockwood (TN) on August 29. The Rebels will look to regroup as their schedule continues into September.

Boone County carries one of the most famous names in American history. It was the very first county ever named after Daniel Boone, established in 1798 while the frontiersman was still alive. Here is the twist: Boone almost certainly never lived here. His only documented visit to the area was a brief stop at Big Bone Lick in 1770, where he examined mammoth fossils before moving on due to threats from Native Americans. Over the years, claims surfaced of his name carved into trees and stones across the region. Most were never proven. The county bears his name not because he called it home, but because his legend already did.
