BOONE COUNTY HISTORY
Boone County and the Civil War | The War Comes to Boone County
Only two engagements between Confederate and Union troops took place in Boone County, and both came in September 1862. That month, Confederate forces were moving into Kentucky, and Union troops had built forts around Covington to defend Cincinnati against an expected attack.
The first fight came on September 17, 1862, in Florence itself. A Confederate detachment of 101 men from General Henry Heth's forces, camped at Snow's Pond north of Walton, clashed with a Union scouting party of 53 men at Florence's main intersection. One Union soldier and five Confederates were killed. A local civilian, Larkin Vaughn, was killed by a stray bullet. A Kentucky Historical Society marker in Florence commemorates the skirmish.
Eight days later, on September 25, fewer than 600 Confederates under General Kirby Smith and Colonel Basil Duke struck the Union camp at Snow's Pond, just north of Walton. The Union troops, under General Judah, whose headquarters was in Florence, had camped between Florence and Falmouth. The Confederates captured about 65 prisoners, and only two Union soldiers were wounded. A second state historical marker stands near the Snow's Pond site.
The county saw one more notable event. On the night of November 27, 1863, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan escaped from the Ohio State Penitentiary. He crossed the Ohio River into Kentucky near Ludlow. On November 28 and 29, he moved through Boone County with the help of sympathetic residents and Big Bone Baptist Church. Tomorrow, we look at life back home.
