Boone County Landowner Takes Sewer Fight All the Way to the Kentucky Supreme Court
A $40 million Sanitation District 1 project to overhaul central Boone County's sewer system has sparked a landmark legal battle that could reshape how public utilities use eminent domain across Kentucky. Naturalist Gayle Pille, who planned to donate her 45-acre Woolper Creek property as a nature preserve, refused SD1's $22,100 easement offer and is now petitioning the Kentucky Supreme Court after losing in two lower courts. Florence Council Greenlights Playground for Children with Special Needs
Florence City Council approved a concept development plan for a fenced playground designed specifically for children with special needs at 7627 Ewing Boulevard. The project was one of several development items addressed at this week's council meeting, which also included a proposed Industrial Revenue Bond deal for a new Athena Corporation complex on Houston Road. Kentucky Army National Guard Cuts Ribbon on New Burlington Maintenance Facility
Boone County got a boost to its military readiness footprint on Monday as the Kentucky Army National Guard celebrated the opening of a new 25,000+ square-foot field maintenance shop at the Burlington Readiness Center on Conrad Lane. The modern facility is designed to service today's military vehicles locally, reducing traffic on I-75 and I-71 and improving response readiness for Northern Kentucky Guard units. Walton Pilot Travel Center Wraps Up Major Renovation, Gives $10K to GO Pantry
The Pilot Flying J in Walton has finished a big refresh as part of the company's nationwide New Horizons upgrade program — think new deli, self-checkout lanes, and a full interior redesign. To mark the occasion, Pilot donated $10,000 to GO Pantry, the Northern Kentucky nonprofit that sends weekend food bags home with more than 1,400 local kids every Friday during the school year. The Boone County Fiscal Court holds its monthly meeting tonight, Tuesday, August 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the Boone County Administration Building (2950 Washington St., Burlington). Key items on the agenda include a second reading on an economic development incentive for KOI Superior Walls, a second reading on a proposed zoning amendment for a 37-acre parcel on North Bend Road that would allow 224 owner-occupied townhomes, a vote on 2026 ad valorem tax rates, and approval of three new trucks for the Public Works department. BOONE COUNTY HISTORY
Florence was once well-known enough to inspire a novelist. In the late 1800s, author John Uri Lloyd set his popular "Stringtown on the Pike" series right here, using the town's old nickname "Stringtown" — a nod to the houses strung out along the old Covington-to-Lexington Pike. The books gave Florence a moment of literary fame that most residents today have never heard of.
