Boone County School Board Approves 4% Tax Levy in Unanimous Vote
The Boone County Board of Education voted 5-0 Monday to approve a general fund tax levy of 64.6 cents on real property and 65.5 cents on personal property. The 4% increase is projected to generate just over $27 million, with the board citing the need to maintain educational quality and avoid staff reductions. The decision drew divided public comment, with some residents pushing back over the impact on retirees and those on fixed incomes, while supporters countered that strong schools are worth the investment. American Airlines adding 7 international routes through CVG in 2027
American Airlines will launch seven new international connecting routes from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport beginning in 2027 — including Barcelona, Amsterdam, Nice, Tokyo, Vienna, Reykjavik, and Porto. The routes connect through AA hubs in Philadelphia, JFK, Charlotte, and O'Hare, giving Northern Kentucky travelers streamlined one-stop international access from their home airport for the first time on many of these destinations.

Time is running out to see the work of self-taught watercolor artist Yin-Shen Chang at the Curt Bessette Art Gallery inside the Boone County Public Library's Main Branch. The exhibit closes September 10, leaving just 10 days to take it in. Chang, who discovered her love of watercolor after retiring, draws inspiration from the landscapes of her native Taiwan, creating pieces that capture everything from frost-covered footbridges to forest waterfalls and a stunning stained-glass dome interior. September Is Library Card Sign Up Month — and There's a Free Gift for New Members
September is Library Card Sign Up Month, and the Boone County Public Library is marking the occasion all month long with a special perk: anyone who signs up for a new card receives a complimentary mini flashlight, while supplies last. Since 1987, the American Library Association has used September to encourage residents of all ages to get connected to their local library, and BCPL is making it easy to join.

A BCPL card opens the door to borrowing books, movies, and music, plus access to technology, resources, and services across all six branch locations in Burlington, Florence, Union, Hebron, Walton, and Petersburg.

To get a card, stop by any branch in person. Eligibility includes Boone County residents and property owners. Just bring a photo ID and proof of your current address (no PO Boxes). If signing up a child under 18, a parent or legal guardian must be present to sign.

Burlington has been the seat of Boone County government since 1800. It has had two other names before settling on Burlington in 1816, first known as Craig's Camp, then Wilmington. Here is the unusual part: Burlington is one of the only unincorporated county seats in all of Kentucky. That means the town that houses the county courthouse, the center of local government for all of Boone County, has no city government of its own. It is a quirk of history that has never been resolved, and probably never will be.
