Florence Police Department Earns State Accreditation at Annual Chiefs Conference
The Florence Police Department received its Certificate of Accreditation through the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police (KACP) Police Accreditation Program at the organization's annual conference. Chief Mallery accepted the honor, which recognizes law enforcement agencies that meet professional standards for efficient and effective operations, evaluated through policy reviews, training and equipment requirements, and an on-site inspection. On the morning of September 17, 1862, Florence was caught up in the Civil War. General Henry Heth had marched 101 Confederate soldiers north from Lexington, pushing toward Cincinnati. Union commanders were ready. Scouting parties rode out along the Lexington Pike. One of those parties, 53 cavalrymen strong, found a Confederate detachment camped at Snow's Pond just outside of town. They attacked at the main intersection of Florence. Five Confederate soldiers were killed. One Union cavalryman fell as well. Larkin Vaughn, a Florence civilian, was struck by a stray bullet and died. Heth's forces retreated south to Lexington. The broader Confederate campaign in Kentucky collapsed six weeks later at the Battle of Perryville. Today, a Kentucky historical marker stands in Florence as a reminder that the Civil War once touched our city.
