CVG Hosts Campus Career Fair at Turfway Park October 7

Boone County Library Ending Cincinnati Library Card Reciprocity in 2027
Boone County Public Library will leave the SWON Libraries consortium Jan. 1, 2027, and reciprocal borrowing with Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library ends Jan. 3. Ohio residents who work in Boone County keep access. BCPL says digital licensing now takes nearly 30% of its materials budget, and it will put the SWON funds toward more eBook and eAudiobook copies and shorter waits.

Boone County Weighs Street-Legal UTVs on Public Roads
After a Sept. 24 public hearing, the fiscal court will keep studying rules that would allow street-legal UTVs on certain roads or speed limits. UTVs are allowed in 72 of Kentucky's 120 counties. Assistant County Administrator Matthew Dowling warned that enforcement would be "very challenging" if cities and the county set different rules. Noise, mud and park use are also concerns.

Mi Cozumel Holds Florence Grand Opening Thursday at 2 P.M.
Mi Cozumel holds its Florence grand opening Thursday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. at 7484 Turfway Road, the restaurant announced on Instagram. The family-owned Mexican chain calls itself the "House of the Margarita Tower" and serves 40-plus margarita flavors, tableside guacamole and flaming fajitas, plus steaks, seafood and birria. Florence joins Newport on the Levee among seven locations listed on its website, with four more planned in Ohio.

Florence to Honor BCHS Legend David Trosper Friday Night
Before Friday's Boone County vs. Conner game (Oct. 2, 7 p.m., Irv Goode Field at Owen Hauck Stadium), Mayor Julie Aubuchon will present a proclamation as BCHS retires Trosper's No. 44 jersey. He was a linebacker on the 1986 Class 4A state title team, a 1987 captain and MVP, and a 2018 NKY Sports Hall of Fame inductee. He coached Conner for 18 seasons and died in June 2025.

Long before Charles LeMoyne de Longueuil rode south from French Canada in 1739, the native people of this region already knew what lay in the valley by Big Bone Creek. The bones were part of the landscape, part of the story of the land itself. They were not a mystery to the people who had lived alongside them for generations.

Longueuil was the first European to collect specimens and send them back for study, shipping a cache of fossils to France where they caused considerable excitement among natural philosophers. He was not, however, the first person to recognize that something significant was buried here. That credit belongs to people whose names were never recorded in any scientific journal.

What the salt lick represented to native communities was also deeply practical. Salt was essential, and the springs at Big Bone Lick were a known and reliable source. The bones were simply context, evidence of what this place had always been: a gathering point, a landmark, a location where the living came and the ancient dead lay waiting just beneath the surface. Thursday, we look at the moment those bones caught the attention of a sitting American president.
