That grocery store pod? It was roasted long before it hit the shelf. Coffee starts losing flavor within weeks of roasting — which is why your morning cup tastes flat, no matter how nice your machine is.

Angelino's does it differently. A third-generation roaster in Los Angeles, they roast, grind, and seal every pod in-house for peak freshness, then ship it to your door within days of roasting. The difference is the first thing you'll notice: real aroma, real flavor, no bitterness.

BOONE COUNTY HISTORY

Slavery and Freedom | Freedom Seekers: Their Names and Their Stories

Most of the people who escaped across the Ohio River are known by no name at all. The records that survive often list only a slaveholder's loss. But some names have endured, and none is better known than Margaret Garner.

On January 27, 1856, a party of 17 people left Boone County by sleigh and crossed the frozen Ohio River on foot. Margaret Garner, her husband Robert, their four children, and Robert's parents Simon and Mary were among them, along with nine others from nearby farms. The nine others reached Canada. The Garners went to the home of a free relative in Cincinnati, where slaveholders and U.S. Marshals surrounded the house. During the standoff, Margaret Garner killed her youngest child rather than see her returned to slavery.

A federal commissioner ruled that the family should be returned to Kentucky, and Ohio had issued warrants for the adults. Archibald Gaines sent the family south before Ohio authorities could act. Margaret Garner died of typhoid fever in 1858. Robert Garner later served in the Union Army and died in the Cincinnati area in 1871. Her story became the basis for novels and an opera, and it remains one of the most documented in Boone County history.

Next week, a war that split families, communities, and the county itself down the middle.
