Fiscal court cuts county property tax rate to 8.5 cents
The Boone County Fiscal Court voted 4-0 on August 31 to lower the county's real property tax rate from 9.2 cents to 8.5 cents per $100 of assessed value — below the state's compensating rate of 9.1 cents. A homeowner with a $300,000 assessment will pay approximately $255 annually to the county. County Judge/Executive Gary W. Moore said conservative budgeting enabled the cut: "This tax rate, coupled with occupational licensing revenue, enables us to fully fund quality county services while keeping the burden off our residents."

Heat advisory in effect; cooling centers open for Boone County
A heat advisory remains in effect through Thursday, September 4, as dangerous temperatures persist heading into the Labor Day weekend. Boone County residents have access to cooling centers across the county. FOX19 also reports storm chances arriving over the weekend. Residents are urged to check on neighbors, stay hydrated, and limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours. WEBN Fireworks turns 50 with biggest show yet this Labor Day
The 50th annual Western & Southern/WEBN Fireworks returns to the Covington riverfront this Labor Day weekend, and organizers are doubling the number of barges for the milestone celebration. Traffic and parking restrictions will be in effect throughout Covington on Sunday. The event is one of the region's most beloved annual traditions and draws tens of thousands to the Ohio River. Boone County families should plan ahead for traffic delays on routes into Covington. Fireworks are set for 9 p.m. Sunday night and airing on Local 12 and Star 64.

I-275 lane closures nightly this week for bridge repairs

Commuters on I-275 should expect nightly lane closures as crews complete concrete patching on the I-275 eastbound bridge over Madison Pike in Kenton County. A single right lane closes at 7 p.m., followed by a middle lane closure at 8 p.m., with all lanes reopening by 6 a.m. Separately, the Combs-Hehl Bridge on I-275 is scheduled for a joint KYTC/Ohio DOT inspection on September 3 with possible brief daytime closures. Plan alternate routes if traveling eastbound on I-275 during evening hours.

St. Elizabeth Healthcare earns NKY Chamber Community Award
The Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce presented St. Elizabeth Healthcare with its monthly Community Award on August 31, recognizing the health system as "far more than a hospital system — a genuine community partner," according to NKY Chamber President and CEO Brent Cooper. St. Elizabeth was cited for its mobile cardiovascular and mammography units, community education programs, and back-to-back recognition as Kentucky's top hospital by U.S. News & World Report. The system operates six facilities across Northern Kentucky, including its Florence location.

Imagine being a high school student in Florence in 1911. If you wanted a diploma, you had one option: travel to Burlington. For a lot of families, that was not realistic. So the county added two rooms to Florence Elementary and called it a start. Students could study close to home for two years, then still had to finish in Burlington. It took until 1913 for Florence to become a real four year high school. In 1954, Boone County consolidated Florence, Burlington, New Haven, and Hebron into one high school on Price Pike. On the Boone County High School opening day, 515 students walked through the doors. Eighteen teachers were waiting. The Class of 1955 would be the first to graduate from what is now one of the most recognizable schools in Northern Kentucky. The old Florence High School building still stands today, home to Rise Academy.
