There is a place in Boone County where the earth gave up its secrets slowly, over centuries, to anyone patient enough to notice. The ground near the Big Bone Creek valley was soft and wet, fed by natural sulfur springs that bubbled up from deep below. The salt in those springs drew animals from hundreds of miles away, the way salt always does. And some of those animals never left.

What they left behind was bone. Enormous, impossible-seeming bone. Teeth the size of a man's fist. Tusks longer than most men were tall. Skulls that suggested creatures no living person had ever laid eyes on. For the native people who had known this place for generations, the bones were simply part of the landscape, evidence that something immense had once walked here.

For the Europeans who arrived in the 1700s, those bones were something else entirely: a mystery wrapped around a question that science had not yet learned how to ask. Big Bone Lick would eventually force that question into the open, and in doing so, it would help create an entirely new field of American science. Tomorrow, we meet the animals that made it famous.
