Florence opens alternative mobility survey through Sept. 16
Florence is asking residents, businesses, and community members to weigh in on how the city should regulate e-bikes, electric scooters, golf carts, and UTVs, following changes to Kentucky law that expanded where these vehicles can operate on roadways. Florence Police Teen Academy taking high school applicants
The Florence Police Department is accepting applications for its five-week Teen Academy, running Wednesday evenings October 21–November 18, 6:30–8:30 p.m. at FPD headquarters, 8100 Ewing Blvd. Students in grades 9–12 will get hands-on experience with DUI enforcement, crime scene investigation, drone operation, and SWAT training. Boone County schools warn parents about sextortion threat

Permanent I-75 ramp closure Sept. 14 could affect Boone County commuters
The southbound I-75 off-ramp onto Fifth Street in Covington (Exit 192) will permanently close on or after September 14 as part of the Brent Spence Corridor Project. Drivers exiting southbound will be rerouted: right onto Crescent Avenue, right onto Third Street, then right onto Philadelphia Street to reach West Fifth Street. The northbound Fifth Street ramp remains open, and detour signage will be posted. West Fifth Street between Crescent Avenue and the northbound ramp will also close indefinitely.

224-unit Drees condo development approved for Boone County
The Boone County Fiscal Court voted 4-0 on Aug. 25 to approve a zone change allowing Drees Homes to build 224 condominiums on 37 acres along North Bend Road near Hebron. The two-story units will include garages, a pool, clubhouse, and walking paths maintained by an HOA. A traffic study was completed in coordination with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, addressing neighbor concerns about road impact on KY-237.

When Boone County High School opened in 1954, the students had decisions to make. Colors were easy enough. Superintendent N.H. Ockerman put it to a vote and the students chose Columbia blue and silver, deliberately picking something that set them apart from the four schools that had just merged to create theirs. The mascot was a different story. Options were presented. The Bison was rejected. The Moonshiners did not make the cut either. The debate dragged on long enough that Principal Chester Goodridge lost his patience. Frustrated, he looked at his students and called them rebels. It was not meant as a compliment. The students loved it. There was also some outside influence at work. James Dean's film "Rebel Without a Cause" had just hit theaters, and it was all anyone their age was talking about. The vote was not close. The Rebels it was. Goodridge's offhand remark became the identity of a school that now has over 1,300 students. Not a bad legacy for a moment of frustration.
