BOONE COUNTY HISTORY

Boone County and the Civil War | Divided Families

Across Kentucky, roughly 80,000 to 100,000 men fought for the Union, including more than 20,000 who had been enslaved. About 35,000 to 40,000 served in the Confederate army. Boone County men were part of both numbers. The Boone County Public Library describes the result plainly: service on both sides created dissension in families and in communities.

Loyalties showed up in small ways. James Dinsmore, who lived on the farm now known as the Dinsmore Homestead, supported the Union. He was too old to fight, but he subscribed to a Republican newspaper from Cincinnati and bought books about the war before it ended. In 1864 one of the enslaved men on his farm, David Taylor, was drafted, and Dinsmore paid for a substitute.

A list of the Boone County soldiers who fought on each side was compiled by author Jack Rouse in his 1996 book, Civil War in Boone County, Kentucky. The book also details the skirmishes fought in the county. Wednesday, we look at the days when the war itself reached the county.
