Brent Spence Bridge Work Brings Nightly I-71/75 Lane Closures
Drivers on I-71/75 northbound should expect evening and overnight lane closures through Friday, September 25, as crews inspect the Brent Spence Bridge's truss and approach spans using rope-access techniques. Florence PD Teen Academy Now Accepting High School Applications
The Florence Police Department is accepting applications for its Teen Academy, a five-week hands-on program for students in grades 9–12. Sessions run Wednesdays, October 21–November 18, from 6:30–8:30 p.m. at 8100 Ewing Blvd. Students get behind-the-scenes exposure to crime scene investigation, crash reconstruction, drone operations, K-9 demos, SWAT team training, and hostage negotiation. Amazon Raises NKY Pay to $24/Hour, Adds Grocery and Banking Perks
Amazon is raising average starting wages for full-time operations employees to nearly $24 per hour — with total compensation exceeding $32/hour when benefits are factored in. New perks include 10–20% Whole Foods discounts and a fee-free credit union membership launching later this year. The raise covers more than 19,000 Kentucky workers, including employees at the Amazon Air hub at CVG in Boone County.

Boone County Swapping Invasive Callery Pears for Native Trees
Boone County is trading invasive trees for native ones. The UK Cooperative Extension's Callery Pear Bounty Program, set for October 9 at the Boone County Enrichment Center (1824 Patrick Dr., Burlington), allows residents who removed a Callery pear — including Bradford and Aristocrat varieties — from their property to exchange photo proof for a free native tree. Trees are in 3-gallon pots, one per household. This event has reached capacity, but contact Lacey Kessell at [email protected] for future programs.

Daniel Boone was 64 years old in 1798. He had blazed the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap, helped found Boonesborough deep in the Kentucky wilderness, and survived ambushes, captivity, and a frontier life that would have broken most men. His name was known on both sides of the Atlantic. He was, in every sense, already a legend.

So when the Kentucky General Assembly sat down to name its new northern county, Boone was the obvious choice. He represented everything Kentucky had come to stand for in the American imagination: courage, endurance, and the willingness to walk into unknown country and make something of it.

What the General Assembly may not have advertised is that in that same year, 1798, Daniel Boone packed his family and left Kentucky for good. He crossed the Mississippi into Spanish-owned Missouri, where, by his own account, he was treated more like the folk hero he actually was. Land disputes had cost him almost everything he owned in Kentucky. There was even a warrant connected to one of those cases that the sheriff couldn't seem to find him to serve. The state that made him famous couldn't hold him. His name stayed behind on the map. He did not. Wednesday, we'll look at what that new county actually looked like on the ground.
