BOONE COUNTY HISTORY
Big Bone Lick | Jefferson's Obsession
Big Bone Lick | From Ancient Ground to State Historic Site
After Jefferson's expedition, Big Bone Lick continued to give up its bones to whoever came looking. Collectors, curiosity seekers, and scientists worked the site through the 1800s and into the 1900s, each generation pulling something new from the earth. The site was never formally protected in those years, and a significant portion of what was once there was removed long before anyone thought to count what was being taken.
What remained was still remarkable. The springs, the creek valley, the soft ground where so many ancient animals had met their end, all of it was still there, still telling the same story it had always told. The National Park Service eventually designated Big Bone Lick a National Natural Landmark, acknowledging what researchers had long understood: there was no other place quite like it in North America.
Today it operates as Big Bone Lick State Historic Site, with a museum, a visitor center, a campground, and trails that follow the same creek valley where mastodons once came to drink and never left. It sits in Union, Kentucky, just south of the Ohio River. Small springs still seep from the ground there, a trace of what once pulled creatures from hundreds of miles away. The bones beneath it are more than ten thousand years old, and the earth is not finished with them yet.
