BOONE COUNTY HISTORY

Big Bone Lick | Jefferson's Obsession

Thomas Jefferson had a theory. He believed that the enormous bones turning up in Kentucky could not belong to extinct animals, because he could not accept that God would allow a species to disappear from the earth entirely. The creatures had to be out there somewhere, alive, perhaps in the unexplored western territories. It was one of the reasons he sent Lewis and Clark west in 1804: find the living version of whatever left those bones behind.

They did not find it. But in 1807, Jefferson sent William Clark back to Big Bone Lick with a different mission: dig. Clark led what became the first funded paleontological excavation in North American history, unearthing hundreds of bones and shipping them east. Jefferson kept some for Monticello, donated others to the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia, and sent a selection to Paris. The bones of Boone County ended up in some of the most important scientific collections on two continents.

Jefferson's theory about living mastodons turned out to be wrong. But his investment in Big Bone Lick helped transform a muddy Kentucky valley into the foundation of an entire scientific discipline. The bones he sent to Paris are still there. Tomorrow, we look at what Big Bone Lick became after the scientists moved on.
