SD1 Defends Design Choice for Central Boone Sewer Project

Sanitation District 1 issued a written defense of its route, saying the project would eliminate about 1.2 million gallons of sewer overflows into Woolper Creek in a typical year. SD1 chose design B.2, which needs easements from 18 property owners, over B.3, which would affect three owners but require pump station upgrades. Landowner Gayle Pille, whose property SD1 is acquiring through eminent domain, has petitioned the Kentucky Supreme Court to hear her case.

BOONE COUNTY HISTORY

First People | Twelve Thousand Years

The land that became Boone County had been home to people long before any European surveyor drew a line around it. Archaeological evidence puts the first humans in this valley around 12,000 B.C., small bands of nomadic hunters following the large game that gathered at salt deposits like Big Bone Lick. They left almost nothing behind except their tools and the bones of what they killed.

What came after them lasted much longer. The Fort Ancient people, named for a site in southern Ohio, lived in villages along the Ohio River and its tributaries in Boone County from roughly A.D. 1000 to 1690, nearly seven centuries. Their largest local settlement, at Petersburg on the Ohio River floodplain, housed between 250 and 500 people at its height. They built central plazas for ceremonies, kept storage pits full of corn, and traded for shell beads from coastal peoples to the south and copper ornaments from tribes to the north. They were farmers and hunters who built something that could fairly be called a civilization.

By the time European traders and explorers reached northern Kentucky in the early 1700s, the Fort Ancient people were gone, displaced or absorbed by pressures from the east. The Shawnee and Miami nations had taken their place as the dominant peoples of the region. The Shawnee claimed much of Kentucky as their own, maintaining villages on the north bank of the Ohio River while using the land to the south for seasonal hunting. That arrangement would hold until European settlers decided they wanted the same land. Tomorrow, we look at the river that tied it all together.
