BOONE COUNTY HISTORY

Boone County and the Civil War | Reconstruction and What Changed

The most important change was the end of slavery. After the war, enslaved people in Boone County were free. On the Dinsmore farm, most of the formerly enslaved workers moved across the river to Indiana, while the Hawkins family stayed on as tenants. Julia Dinsmore later bought a small house in Rising Sun, Indiana, for Jilson Hawkins and his family.

Other things stayed the same. Boone County remained a farming county. Men who had fought against each other returned home and, in the library's words, generally resumed being neighbors, church members, and friends.

Boone County's best known writer, John Uri Lloyd, later set several of his historical novels in this era. The war left its mark on the county without ever fully defining it. Next week, the story of Burlington, the small town that runs the whole county.
