Total Wine & More Coming to Florence with 25 Jobs Sept. 24
Total Wine & More, the nation's largest independent beverage retailer, opens its Florence location at 7646 Mall Road on September 24. The 15,000-square-foot store at the Village at the Mall shopping center will carry approximately 8,000 wines, create 25 jobs, and bring the development to full occupancy. Boone County 335-Home Development Advances to Full Commission
A Boone County Planning Commission subcommittee has recommended approval of Drees Homes' revised plan for 335 units, including 219 single-family homes and 29 townhome buildings, on 185 acres along U.S. 42 between Rice Pike and Bleu Yacht Lane. The project was reduced from 377 units after March 2026 community pushback and includes a 30-home annual construction cap to address school capacity concerns. The full commission reviews it October 7.

BCHS Rebels Fall to Mason County 38-26 in Week 5
The Boone County Rebels rallied from a 19-7 deficit to take a 20-19 lead against Mason County on Friday, but the Royals responded with 19 unanswered points to win 38-26 in Week 5. Three Boone County turnovers proved costly in the defeat. The Rebels have a bye this week.

In 1798, Kentucky was just six years old. It had only joined the Union in 1792, and the men running it were still figuring out what that meant for a state that stretched from the Appalachians to the Mississippi. Campbell County, in the north, covered more land than any one court system could reasonably govern. Settlers in its western reaches were living days away from the nearest courthouse, the nearest deed recorder, the nearest anything that resembled authority.

The answer was the same one being used across the young republic: draw a line. Split the county. Bring the government closer to the people who needed it. On December 13, 1798, the Kentucky General Assembly did exactly that, voting to carve a new county from the western portion of Campbell County. Within two years, 1,534 people would call it home.

The land they were settling was beautiful and harsh in equal measure. The Ohio River cut along the northern edge. Rolling hills and dense forest covered most of the interior. The soil was rich, the winters were cold, and the nearest major city was Cincinnati, across the river in a territory that hadn't even become a state yet. The people who came here came to stay. Tomorrow, we'll meet the man this county was named after, and the quiet irony that surrounds that decision to this day.
