Athena Hospitality's $100M Florence Campus Gets Planning Nod
The Boone County Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval of a zoning change for Athena Hospitality's proposed $100 million mixed-use development at 3700 Houston Road in Florence. The project would add two hotels — including a Residence Inn — a 14,000-sq-ft restaurant, and a new corporate office building adjacent to the company's existing headquarters. The recommendation now heads to Florence City Council for final approval; the city approved a related financing agreement on August 25.

Boone County weighs rules for e-bikes, scooters, and UTVs
Boone County Fiscal Court will hold a public caucus on September 24 to gather input on regulating motorized micromobility devices — including e-bikes, e-scooters, electric and gas dirt bikes, and UTVs. BCHS Rebels football undefeated at 2-0, host NCC Friday
The Boone County High School Rebels football team carries a perfect 2-0 record into Friday night's home game against Newport Central Catholic (0-2), with kickoff set for 7 p.m. on September 4. The Rebels girls volleyball team is also in action this weekend, competing in a multi-game stretch that includes matchups against Holy Cross, Ballard, and Campbell County.

Free Neighborhood Night Out and movie night set for Sept. 11
The City of Florence is hosting a free Neighborhood Night Out and movie screening at South Fork Park (9200 S. Fork Park Drive) on Friday, September 11. CVG ranks among nation's fastest airports for TSA wait times
A new Travel Bulletin study of TSA security lines at 50 major U.S. airports found CVG ranks 10th shortest in the country, with an average wait of just 5.9 minutes during the summer 2026 travel season — well below the 9.9-minute national average. The study analyzed TSA MyTSA app data and passenger throughput from mid-June through mid-August.

Florence was built on traffic. For decades, the Covington-Lexington Turnpike ran through the center of town, bringing travelers, traders, and commerce with it. Florence had hotels to house them and businesses to serve them. Then came the railroad. In 1877, the Cincinnati Railroad chose to run its line through neighboring Erlanger instead of Florence. Nobody recorded why. The stagecoach traffic that had sustained Florence for decades was no match for a railroad town. Business slowed. People went elsewhere. Florence went quiet. It stayed that way for the better part of a century. Then I-75 came through. What the railroad had done for Erlanger in 1877, the interstate did for Florence in the mid-twentieth century. The town that had been bypassed and forgotten became one of the fastest-growing cities in Northern Kentucky.
